Community Resilience Through Integration of Robust Built Environment with Business Mindset
Communities and businesses face a variety of natural and manmade hazards, approaching resilience with different focuses. As buildings and infrastructure systems are foundational for supporting social and economic needs, many communities at the city and state levels have developed resilience plans (focusing on physical infrastructure) and taken actions to improve performance and recovery of their built environment.
As part of a community, resilient businesses view a disruptive event as both risk and opportunity, and they tend to focus more on their organizational resilience and effectively use it as their competitive edge to thrive in a post-event environment. Bringing community resilience planners and business leaders can facilitate a dialogue to help improve community resilience in a holistic and mutually beneficial manner.
This session consists of an overview of the NIST Community Resilience Planning Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems (resilience planning guide), application examples of the resilience planning guide, and perspectives of a business leader on resilience and its value. It also will feature a panel discussion on commonalities and differences between community resilience and business resilience, and key aspects of business organizational resilience that can be leveraged to maximize community resilience.
