The built environment has faced incredible change.

Fifty years ago, 60 percent of new single-family homes were one story. High-rise residential structures were completed in an average of 15 months. Our buildings have become increasingly sophisticated, sustainable, and resilient – dictated by climate forces, the evolving wants and needs of building occupants, and changes in technology, materials, and construction techniques.

Where will the next 50 years take us?

2024 marks five decades of significant contribution and service by the National Institute of Building Sciences to the U.S. built environment.

While NIBS was established by Congress to support public and private building technology advancing the nation’s structures, this 50th anniversary belongs to many. Our research and work is defined by the volunteers, board members, industry organizations, federal agencies, and nonprofit partners who helped see to completion every project undertaken.
