The new American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Code of Ethics’ first statement reads, “Engineers govern their professional careers on the following fundamental principles [to] create safe, resilient, and sustainable infrastructure...”

Also, the Code of Ethics requires “Engineers adhere to the principles of sustainable development.” ASCE Policy Statement 500 “Resilient Infrastructure Initiatives” notes “an all-hazard, comprehensive risk assessment that considers event likelihood and consequence, encourages mitigation strategies, monitors outcomes, and addresses recovery and return to service should be routinely included in the planning/design process for infrastructure at all government levels.”

Many of the concepts of resilience and sustainability are new to structural engineers, including how to incorporate these concepts into their projects.

This session will help structural engineers understand the concepts of resilience, functional recovery and sustainability and how they are related, how they are different, and how they can be incorporated into the projects they design.
