Resilience in Design
Session 1: NYS Climate Impacts Assessment & Buildings - What You Need to Know
The New York State Climate Impacts Assessment provides a science-based analysis of what to expect from climate change across the State. The assessment is a comprehensive research effort to enable decision-makers at all levels to better understand the impacts of climate change and make informed choices about how to prepare for them. The session will also provide opportunities to enhance equity and reduce the vulnerability of those most at risk. In a first, the assessment includes a chapter on Buildings and the impact climate change will have on these critical spaces in our communities and lives. During this session, the participants will get a deep dive into the impacts that buildings across NYS will see in the next 20 to 50 years as a result of our changing climate.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will gain awareness of the contents of the NYS Climate Impacts Assessment.
- Participants will be able to identify the various climate driven risks that impact buildings across NYS.
- Participants will be able to recognize the differences of climate impacts to buildings across the various regions of NYS.
- Participants will be able to identify the most likely and most dangerous climate impacts risks that will affect NYS buildings over the next 20 to 50 years.
Session 2: Designing for Resilience: Harnessing Innovation and Community-Centered Approaches in the Built Environment
This session explores innovative design strategies that foster resilient and sustainable communities. Drawing from the expertise of Blima Ehrentreu, Founder and CEO of The Designers Group, the presentation will highlight actionable methods for retrofitting existing spaces, leveraging advanced materials and technologies, and integrating community engagement in urban planning.
Attendees will gain insights from real-world case studies, showcasing how intentional design can address climate challenges, support functional recovery, and improve the quality of life for building users. The session also will cover the integration of green infrastructure and ecosystem services to ensure long-term adaptability and success.
By sharing these strategies, the session aims to inspire professionals across disciplines to think creatively and collaboratively in designing for a resilient future.
Learning Objectives:
- Examine strategies for retrofitting buildings to enhance resilience and sustainability.
- Understand the role of innovative materials and technologies in tackling environmental challenges.
- Discover effective approaches to integrating community engagement in design and planning processes.
- Learn how to incorporate green infrastructure into urban projects to improve resilience.
